Traffic Laws and Point Values in Charles County

Traffic laws in Charles County follow the Maryland Transportation Article, the same as all Maryland counties. Several violations stand out for the severity of their consequences. DUI under Transportation Section 21-902 is the most serious common traffic offense, with 12 points attached to a conviction. Reckless driving under Section 21-901.1 adds 6 points. Driving on a suspended license under Section 16-303 carries 3 points and exposes you to additional suspension time.

Points accumulate on your driving record and are tracked by the MVA. When you reach 8 points, the MVA sends a warning letter. At 12 points your license is suspended. At 18, it is revoked. The courts in Charles County report convictions to the MVA automatically after a case is closed. There is no way to keep points off your record if you are convicted, which is one reason many people choose to contest citations rather than simply paying them.

Paying Traffic Fines in Charles County

Payable citations in Charles County can be handled without appearing in court. You can pay online, by mail, or in person at the courthouse. Paying means you accept responsibility and points will be added to your license. If you want to contest the citation, you must request a hearing before the payment deadline on your ticket. Do not just ignore a citation. Unpaid fines can lead to a failure to appear warrant and an additional license suspension.

The Maryland Online Dispute Resolution system lets eligible defendants request a waiver or trial hearing online. This is available for many payable traffic violations. DUI and other must-appear offenses do not qualify. For those cases, you must come to the courthouse in person.

If your fine totals $150 or more, you can request a payment plan using form DCA-131. Bring or mail the form to the District Court in La Plata, or send it to the Traffic Processing Center at P.O. Box 6676, Annapolis, MD 21401. The toll-free number is 1-800-492-2656. Payment plans let you pay over several months with no added interest.

Note: Failure to pay a traffic fine or appear for a scheduled hearing in Charles County can result in a bench warrant being issued and additional charges.
